Citroën GS Birotor brochure (French/edited), 1973. One of the projects that drove Citroën towards bankruptcy and lead to its demise as an independent manufacturer. The rotary engined version of the GS cost as much as the bigger DS and used more fuel. Launched at the same time as the 1973 oil crisis, sales were slow and the cars that were sold were found to be unreliable. After 847 were sold Citroën pulled the plug and even attempted to buy back all of the rotary-engined GS models they had sold in order to avoid the warranty claims and the need to carry parts. In 1974 Peugeot began a merger with Citroën backed by the French government, the takeover was complete by 1976
